Acne Awareness

There are several types

June is Acne Awareness Month

Acne comes in many different forms affecting people of all ages.  Most people have had experience with some kind of breakout in their life.  It is common for us to hear what a negative impact acne can have on someone’s self confidence.

The most reasonable way to approach acne, according to dermatologist Dr. Murad, is to recognize that the skin is the largest and most connected organ in the body.  This means that you have to include the whole body when helping the skin. He recommends a complete inclusion Health approach including a diet built on water-rich foods, regular exercise, attention to sleep cycle, routine targeted skin care and self care that enables each individual to best manage their stress.

There are several different types of acne.  Some of the most common types include:

Comedones: Hair follicles that become clogged with oil and dead skin cells that develop into bumps and whiteheads.

Whiteheads: Clogged pores that remain below the skin and are not inflamed.  They can appear as a small bump or a raised bump with a white head.

Blackheads: These are comedones that are open to the surface of the skin. They appear black or dark brown in colour which is caused by oil’s reaction to air.

Papules: Appear as small, red or pink bumps on the skin.  These are whiteheads or blackheads that have become inflamed.  Picking at these may lead to scarring.

Pustules: a version of an inflamed pimple, a pustule looks like a whitehead but is also has a ring around the bump.  This type of acne is the classic pimple.

More Severe types of acne that involve deep inflamed and pustular cysts, nodules on face and body and severe flushing require assessment, diagnosis and treatment by a physician.

While there is no one cause that leads to acne and clogged pores, some of the factors that may aggravate the condition include: Hormones, certain medication, genetics, comedogenic products, stress and physical pressure from helmets, chinstraps etc.,
