Myth: Stronger products are better products

If you have ever researched acne products, you know that Benzoyl Peroxide and Salicylic Acid are the 2 recommended choices and this is for good reason.  The Salicylic acid unclogs pores and the Benzoyl Peroxide kills acne bacteria.  Overusing these products or looking for the highest concentration is not always the best choice.  Instead look for a medical grade product. This means that the product has high grade active ingredients and less is more.  

Myth: Blackheads are dirt in your pores

According to Dr. Germain, “Blackheads have nothing to do with dirt.”  Skin cellular turnover is a natural process that pushes oil and debris out of your pores and helping them keep clean.  When this process doesn’t happen fast enough, our pores collect a buildup of oil and debris.  Dirt isn’t actually involved.  Using products that increase cellular turnover can help.  Retinol products are an example of a product that can increase cellular turnover.  It is recommended you talk to a skin care professional about your options because Retinol can have some side effects such as redness and peeling

Myth: Breakouts mean you don’t wash your face enough

It is a fantasy that simply washing your face will get rid of pimples.  The reality is that over washing can actually work against you by stripping away natural oils.  If your skin detects that your skin is dehydrated it can actually compensate by making more oil which can result in clogged pores and oily skin.  The solution is to start by using your medical face wash and toner once a day only.  Your skin care professional can help you develop the best protocol for you based on a skin assessment.

Myth: Moisturizers cause acne

This myth is tied to the previous myth. Myth: Hair products do not cause acne

Unfortunately what you put in your hair DOES have an effect on your face.  This happens when oils from hair products continuously make contact with your face.  The solution is to avoid products with petroleum jelly and to look for products that are water based and not oil based.

Myth: Stress DOES NOT cause acne

“Stress creates a hormonal imbalance in the body, which can lead to acne,” points out Dr. Germain.  According to a study done at Wake Forest University School of Medicine, stressed out teenagers are 23% more likely to have severe acne.  Researchers think this is due to stress induced inflammation.  There is also other factors such as stress eating which can be a contributor.  Finding some time for stress relieving activites such as exercise, yoga and meditation can only benefit our skin.
